If You Don’t Throw Your Line in the Water, You Definitely Won’t Catch a Fish
influenced by my human design
I have been subscribing to the idea
that I must be patient and wait for an invitation
from those whom I wish to know
and that if I were to ask out of interest first
the mechanisms of defined and undefined centers
and channels will conspire to prevent connection
or rather the centers and channels will not conspire
to create connection but
this morning in the shower
an epiphany washed over me that was so obvious
I don’t know why I hadn’t realized it before
I had been reluctant to feign any interest
out of this dogmatic belief in that one human
design tenet for so long that I was probably starving
but then idea came to me
if I don’t throw my line in the water
how is a damn fish supposed to know
I even exist outside the surface of the water
while I stand there waiting on the muddy banks
of the river like miser of love
