Diary of a Programmer 14– the UX of Highlighting Text in a Google Doc on Mobile
first you hold your thumb
on the screen to invoke highlighting mode.
this creates a starting and ending anchor
point or tabs or handles
or whatever you want to call them
that you can grab onto.
where would you go from there?
would you grab one and move your thumb
toward the top of the screen,
expecting the document to scroll up
and highlight the appearing text
as motion of the text falls toward the bottom
like blocks of tetris?
or would you move your thumb up
to the top text shown on the screen,
then let go of the handle,
then scroll up more on the screen
using your thumb to swipe down,
so that more unhighlighted text shows up
on the screen, then grab the top handle
and hold onto it with your thumb
and move your thumb up to highlight
more text and repeat this process
until you've selected all the text
you wanted to highlight in the document?
which method would prove the higher
and faster accuracy rate?
which method makes you trust
you could accurately highlight/select
text in the doc without error
while you are walking along the street
attempting to send a poem
in a Whatsapp message to your girlfriend
while she visits her family
with her husband in her childhood
city of Budapest?
